What is Released Time
Released time programs allow for public school students, who have written requests from their parents, to take time during regular school hours to receive religious instruction.
When Did It Begin
Released Time was first implemented by Dr. William Albert Wirt in Gary, Indiana in 1914. Today, there are approximately 1,000 released time programs operating around the country, with over 250,000 students enrolled.
Supreme Court Ruling
In 1952, Justice William O Douglas wrote the majority opinion upholding the right for students to be released from public school to receive religious instruction.
